The Raw Dog Food Truth
Your Dog Won't Eat Raw Food? Breaking the Kibble Addiction Once and For All
The myth of the "perfect diet" for dogs has created generations of malnourished pets. Raw feeding experts DeDe Murcer Moffett and Dr. Judy Jasek tackle the dangerous misconception that dogs should eat the same food day after day, year after year.
"Would you eat the exact same meal for five years straight?" they ask, highlighting how unnatural this approach is for canines - natural scavengers designed to consume varied food sources. The experts debunk the marketing ploys behind "premium kibble" claims and address why some dogs initially reject raw diets (hint: they're experiencing withdrawal from addictive taste enhancers and sugars in processed foods).
Through real-world examples, they demonstrate how pet parents who persevere through transition periods see remarkable health transformations. One new customer's story illustrates the journey perfectly: his dog initially refused pure raw food, but after gradual introduction and eliminating lower-quality options, the dog began selecting the nutrient-dense raw food while rejecting synthetic alternatives.
The conversation clarifies why bone content is essential (despite social media myths claiming otherwise), why rotational feeding provides complete nutrition without synthetic supplementation, and how "balance over time" mimics how dogs would naturally eat. They also share practical grooming advice that complements good nutrition - regular brushing stimulates circulation and distributes natural oils for optimal coat health.

Oh, snap, snap. Well, hello raw feeders. I'm Deedee Mercer-Moffitt, ceo of a raw dog food and company where your pet's health is our business and we're friends. Like my friend, dr Judy Jasik Ain't letting nobody feed kibble now, is ya? Nope, nobody.
Speaker 2:Nobody, not the un-kibble, or the raw bulls, or the perfect kibbles, or none of them. I mean, the marketing they use is just incredible, you know, and people you know fall for it. Well, it's a good kibble though, ain't no such thing.
Speaker 1:Ain't no such thing. I've been looking for a good donut I really had Dr Chasick, but it ain't there.
Speaker 2:I'm trying to find it. They might taste good, but they're not good right, right, right, you know it's really funny.
Speaker 1:Uh, the things that get in people's heads, um, and here's, here's what I mean by that. So, um, when we had a review, one of our customers and sometimes I, you know, obviously I see the reviews when they come up and they've been a customer for since 2022, so about three years but they have fed a boneless blend, okay, for a very long time and the same blend for a very long time, so a boneless beef and the comment was this um, and I let these reviews stand, because they're reviews and they need to stand, but they the, the poops aren't solid, but my dog strains to poop. Now you and I can look at that and say that's the, the reasoning behind that's pretty obvious One. You gotta have bone in the diet. Now, in the review, they also stated that, that that dog should not have bone in every meal. Because they've done extensive research and I understand what they're reading because we've seen it right, the right, the, the customers get it in their mind that.
Speaker 1:And there was a big brouhaha about beef bone in general, dr Jasek, where there was a lot of talk out there on social media and probably from some of the other companies that don't grind bone, that dogs were not able to digest real raw beef bones and therefore should not have bone in their diet every day. Now I'm going to greatly disagree with that. One, because I haven't seen that in my experience. Two, I have definitely seen the dogs who don't get enough bone in their diet not look as good, not have those vitamins and minerals, not have a complete diet, um.
Speaker 1:And three, the quality. I'm not sure what that means. The quality has changed because I haven't done any rotation in the diet, I've not done turkey duck pork and I've not done any bone, so I just wanted to. I don't mind bad reviews if they're warranted, right, but I don't think that you can come to a conclusion although they do. Conclusion, although they do that the food is the thing that has lost quality, when in fact you're just not feeding everything you need to feed the dog is deficient in nutrients.
Speaker 2:The dog is malnourished in some ways because they not balancing. You can't feed a diet like that. I mean it's the boneless blends are deficient in minerals, you know from from the get go. So you have to be compensating for that. And if you're not rotating a raw diet it's not going to be nutritionally complete. And we go over this with people and over it with people. And because we tell people we don't want you to do synthetics and that you know we discourage people from, you know, trying to balance the diet with produce. Little produce is okay in the food but people use that as well. I'm adding vegetables in. So that's what's balancing the diet. And this is where we always highly discourage people from trying to make their own food at home because they do like hamburger or rice and veggies or something like that and that's a balanced meal. The veggies don't balance it. You have to do the meat, bone and organ organ and you have to rotate. One protein is not a complete, even if it has the bone in it, it's not complete.
Speaker 2:And if you add in synthetics, who knows how bioavailable those are, you know. So we don't recommend that you have to do the rotation. But I tell you I don't know why people I don't know why people don't, don't follow us. I mean, I see this in other things that I recommend, other therapies, like we, you know, give people like, like we do things like these mistletoe injections and we'll say, here's your schedule, here's where you start, here's where you increase, and then they'll send in a refill order and they've never increased it and we haven't heard from them. So are they afraid? I mean, I don't. Why do people come in and want information and then not, you know, not follow through? Why do people want their pet on optimal diet and then they don't follow through? With the intro? You have all the information on your website, you know, I don't know, don't know. Humans are a mystery to me.
Speaker 1:They are so, so mysterious mystery to me. They are so, so mysterious, but the thing about it is is that it's doubly hard when you want to come back and respond. Right, because it doesn't matter how I respond, it doesn't matter how our customer care team responds, it is going to not make them happy, right? Because what makes people happy is yes, you're absolutely right.
Speaker 2:Yep, they want you to agree with them, yep. But they've already decided and they just want your blessing that they are correct.
Speaker 1:And I'm going to tell you, listeners, that if you feed the exact same thing, whether it's turkey duck beef pork, for three years straight, your dog won't be as healthy as a dog who gets beef duck, turkey pork, raw meaty bones, duck feet, duck heads a variety. What does well-balanced guys? It means over the lifetime, over the month, over the week, and there's no way that that's going to be obtained if you are feeding the exact same thing and I I have one other customer that the dog has stopped eating. Right, stopped eating. Why? Again, this is a blend with bone in it. No-transcript, over five years. Look, I'm not going to eat anything for over a week probably.
Speaker 2:I'm not going to eat the same thing, exact same thing, every meal. Now, you know there's some things I might do every day, Like I like my coffee in the morning, and you know there's some some things that might change that up too, though. You drink different coffees.
Speaker 1:Yeah, sometimes I'll do the kona blend, some days I'll do the this blend and, you know, after I go through a bag or something like that, because I get tired of the same taste that's true, I do that too.
Speaker 2:Sometimes I add some mushrooms and I like a little chaga sometimes in my coffee.
Speaker 1:So there you go.
Speaker 2:Yeah, but yeah, it would get really boring. And dogs are natural scavengers. That's their nature is to go out and eat whatever they can find in nature. So that's why they they always get their noses to the ground picking up stuff. So it's their, that's their nature and they don't. You know they don't have a choice. They don't go to the store and say and I'm really tired of eating beef, could maybe I'm gonna try some turkey tonight? You know they just have to eat whatever is in the bowl and then. But then people say there's something wrong with the food, because they all of a sudden stop eating.
Speaker 1:That's exactly what they say, and I will even say let me send you something different, you bring me back, that we'll get you something different. And even sometimes people are like no, my dog can only eat this one. Why? Because five years ago I did a stupid allergy test and my dog can only eat this one. Why? Because five years ago I did a stupid allergy test and my dog can only eat this. Okay, well, no, no, no, no. But.
Speaker 1:But this is where we are doing a major disservice to our animals, because we get something in our head and and and we can't let go of it. And then there's other people that will really work with you. For instance, new customer Jeremy Shepard, out here, met him, had my shirt on, I think, and Lazi looks so good that people are always asking about Lazi, you know, and he was anyway. He ended up ordering food and he texts me and he says my dog won't eat it at all. Now, you and I have been doing this a long time. I said how much kibble does your dog eat? Well, he, you know. Basically, that is a sign to us that this animal is addicted to taste enhancers, to high sugary diets, even if they're diets that are high on the on the produce side, right, because that turns into sugar. So I said look here, here is is what I see Right, and here's how you can break a sugar addiction. Some things people like, some they don't. They don't like the fasting, even though if you understood how fasting works, I think you would do it. But anyway, I, I don't push. I just said hey, here, here's what you can do. Now this particular pet parent said I don't push. I just said hey, here's what you can do.
Speaker 1:Now this particular pet parent said I don't want my dog addicted, I'm going to keep trying. I said okay. So I hadn't talked to him for a week and right as we got on the podcast, I saw a text that came in and he had some other. So he got rid of the kibble. He had some substandard raw was it was a commercial raw and he said he mixed the commercial raw with the pure raw that we sell and he said he ate the pure raw and didn't eat, you know, and pushed away the substandard raw. So I was like good for you.
Speaker 1:So see, this pet parent did keep going. Why? Because he loves this dog and he evidently thought that, you know, I didn't have my head up my sphincter and that maybe I might know a few things. Maybe it was my approach, I don't know. I just said here's what I see and I think, because you and I have been doing it so long that we don't have to get tons and tons of information, we pretty much know from the symptoms and kind of what's going on. Right, it's not like I'm a psychic.
Speaker 2:When we first moved into this house we had these two outdoor cats that the people who bought the house from gave away the neighbors across the street. Well, they came right back as soon as somebody else showed up here and I'm like, oh, hi guys, okay, how would you like some raw food? And these cats are outside so they're like catching mice and birds and stuff and they the one showed up first and then like a couple days later, the other one showed up and the first one showed up and I just put some raw food like this is what you get fed and he literally would not eat it, sniffed it and walked away. I said, all right, I guess you're gonna go catch mice, because I ain't feeding a kibble. I I mean, the people across the street have a big horse barn and they got lots of cats, so I figured they probably just got a big bowl of kibble out. There is what they're feeding them. And I'm like, dude, there's no kibble here, so eat that, or not and it took a few days.
Speaker 2:And then he'd like kind of take a bite and like I don't know what this stuff is, you know the other cat showed up and he, I think, was a little leery of it, but he he got into a meal or two.
Speaker 2:Now they're like as soon as they see me walk into the kitchen in the morning they are at that kitchen door mowing Like they can. I mean they act like they haven't eaten in weeks. You know now they, now they love it. But I'm just like sorry, go across the street and get your kibble fix. But you're here you know, but he wouldn't touch it.
Speaker 2:He would not. And these were outdoor cats. They're already eating meat and stuff, they're hunting and stuff, but he's like I don't know what this stuff is. I want my sugar fix, I want my donuts. I'm like, sorry, no donuts here.
Speaker 1:Well, and this sweet pepper, he had said to me well, I'm feeding kibble and a raw. And I said, is it pure raw? Because your dog just may not know what to do with food. That is more like it's hunting, right, because it has gotten so used to the taste enhancers, to the things that are put in there for that first taste test. And he said, oh yeah, it's pure raw. He snapped a photo of the ingredients and I said, okay, no, that that. Look at my ingredient list and look at that one. Okay, that's all synthetic. And do you see, it's got beets and it's got peas and it's got carrots and it's got this and it's got. I said that's, that's a whole lot of plant protein, not much real protein and all that other stuff that you see, those are all synthetics. That, my friend, is not pure raw. So that it was just. It was funny because. But it's just again, like we said, marketing, you could market shoe leather as long as you, you know, said the right thing, Right the right advertising yeah, Right right.
Speaker 1:But we, if you are seeing, okay, a decline in your dog's coat, if you're seeing a decline in their energy, in their eyes, in their teeth, we can help you. Right, it's not like we haven't seen that before, but what we you right, it's not like we haven't seen that before. But what we want to look at is what is your rotation right? Are you doing real fish? Are you doing extra things like duck heads and duck feet and this, and that I know people are like I don't really want to do that, but we can help you. It's typically a tweak, right, it's typically a tweak. And then I will say this one last thing Lazi is six years old.
Speaker 1:She had her second bath in her life just the other day, and I will say that after she had a bath, she even was shinier than before. She looked amazing. Why? Because sometimes you know you just got to get that dead hair out of there and she gets brushed a lot too. But I will say this that over over, giving dogs baths will take all of that oil out. Yeah, but I will also say never giving your dog a bath will probably not be a good thing either.
Speaker 2:So I think brushing is really important too because it stimulates.
Speaker 2:You know for people that dogs I could kind of chronically itchy. That's one of the things I ask them are you, are you brushing them? Because bathing can definitely like over dry the skin and if people are using like chlorinated water and stuff like that can be irritating to the skin. But the brushing it gets out like the dead hair but also just stimulates the skin. It's like a little skin massage and it brings like the circulation back up to the skin and I think it's just really good for the skin. Even if it's a short coated dog and they don't look like they need to be brushed, just a soft brush just stimulating that coat in that skin. I think that really helps with skin. It helps stimulate the oil glands and stuff. I really think it helps keep the skin and coat healthier.
Speaker 1:Yeah, oh, lazi's almost looking like a Quinceantilla. You know the hairless, those hairless dogs, because she just get it's hot here and she's getting rid of her hair. She's like get it off me.
Speaker 2:So it's going to be miserable to be in. How hot is it down there?
Speaker 1:You know, right now we're only probably sitting around the 100s, but this week we're going back up to the 108s, but it, you know, it was 115.
Speaker 2:Oh my gosh.
Speaker 1:Last week. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2:Holy smokes I'd be, losing my hair too.
Speaker 1:Right, I can't take off enough clothes.
